Gary - Awesome. Thanks so much for the tips. I'll be adding all these to my map.

Transienttravels - I used to have a big giant map up on the wall as well. The nice thing about keeping it online though is that you get to take it with you when you finally get started.

I haven't checked out that part of google maps, thanks for the tip. I loved that you said, "Just creating a map and marking locations is a great way to keep the travel dream going when you’re stuck in one place for a while, and can give you some unexpected ideas for places to travel." Behind my computer, hanging on the wall is a giant map with pins that serves as motivation for me everyday.

Hawaii:
Big Island
- Mauna Kea on a Saturday. You can drive to the summit and they give free tours of the telescopes. If you are going in November, this might not be possible due to snow. Dress for cold weather (yes, in Hawaii). They have a star party at the visitor center a few thousand feet below.
- Volcanoes National Park. Nuff said. Kilauea is erupting right now (I think).
- South Point and the green sand beach. Hard to get to and there aren't any signs. Well worth it if you can make the trip. Rent a 4-wheel drive on the Big Island.
- Black Sand Beach. Near south point. Sea turtles sun themselves here.
- Pololu Valley. Far north end of the island. You'll think you're in the Pacific Northwest here.
- The Big Island has 11 climate zones from arctic on Mauna Kea to desert to rainforest.

Maui
- Haleakala. You can rent a bike at the top and coast down 10,000 ft.
- Hana Road. one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Takes forever to go 40 miles because the road is so narrow and windy.
- Lahaina. Touristy, but a great place to watch the sunset. Can see two other islands from here and can take boat trips to Molokai and Laina.

There a lot in Hawaii once you get out of Honolulu.
