Using a free program like Microsoft Money is great – it really helps you keep track and I am now test driving a new online program to keep track of finances everywhere, and for americans it’s great – because it will even keep track of bank accounts and ccs for you. Hi Sarah,

I’m pretty much in the car all the time. Occasionally I’ll stay in hostels, but it’s been less than a week over the course of the last year. I’ll stay with friends as well occasionally, and of course at my parent’s when I’m there. On the whole though, in the car. I (Craig) love Jessica’s tips, especially “think of prices in terms of hours of work”. It’s a trick I often use to work out the value of a purchase. Is this worth five hours of my life?

I have gone the way of recording everything, but given it up as unnecessary. It’s really useful when you’re trying to figure out a fair budget or if you’re trying to stop money “leaks” but I find it too irritating day to day. It doesn’t help me control my cashflow — unlike running out of cash –, so it doesn’t really do much for me.

I guess this is really a personality choice: my INTP just doesn’t go there

It is a great idea to talk about managing budget on a travel site. I think some people forget and then it becomes a shock and hassle while traveling or overspending occurs. Great idea and post!

You really keep track of your expenses really well. The excel spreadsheet is awesome. Its pretty impressive that you even write down if you spend 25cents. I was curious do you ever catch a night in a hotel or are you exclusively spending your whole year in your van. I asked because the hotel I work for has a really awesome promotion that really slashes room rates so if you need a hotel you should come visit us. Its The Hampton Inn, check it out

Oh check out this funny video called ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã…”Ballad of a Traveler, it absolute hilarious and really sums of the experience of a unhappy traveler.
