[...] For ease of meeting people, backpacking and hostels has got vandwelling beat, hands down. Not that it’s not easy to meet people while living in a vehicle, but while staying in hostels it’s practically forced upon you. If you’re a shy person hostels are a great way to break out of your shell. If you prefer being able to easily have alone-time then a car is great. For more tips on meeting people outside of hostels while traveling check out this previous ITP Article. [...]

Tatting is by far the best. I do it everywhere. On buses, waiting in lines, while walking around town. It's so strange (people don't recognize it like they do crocheting or knitting), that I'm always getting asked about it. Now, if only I could get them to buy a piece once they've asked about it I'd have my traveling paid for.

Very entertaining, and helpful. Staying at hostels makes it easy to meet people too (at least in other countries). If you hang out in the lounge for any length of time you'll meet other people, some by themselves, who you can chat with and maybe even travel with for a bit.

That's brilliant. I wish more of my mistakes ended up in a meal.

On the other hand, misunderstandings (assuming they're not insulting) also work great as conversation starters.

While in Milan, I went to a bar and asked for a hot chocolate and the bartender burst out laughing. Turns out, it sounded like I'd asked for a chocolate gelato, (which they very obviously didn't sell). I had the words right, but my pronunciation was horrible. It started up a conversation with him and one of the bar patrons and the three of us ended up having dinner with the baker next door. I'd gotten there in early afternoon and didn't leave until nearly midnight with two bottles of wine and a bag of bread.

Missed my train, but what a wonderful evening. All because I didn't know how to pronounce "hot" correctly in Italian.

Yeah, just don't risk slang: it could backfire on you and you have no way of excusing yourself. Then again...it makes an interesting conversation starter.

I'm a bit of a wallflower at times, so thanks Jessica for some good ideas.

For me, everywhere I go, I try to learn a least a few key phrases in the local language. I think locals really appreciate it, and I always get asked questions and strike a convo that way.
