Video – Wine tasting in the Clare Valley, South Australia

June 1, 2011 in Australia

The Clare Valley is a South Australian wine region about two-and-a-half hours drive from the capital of the state. You can organise a wine-tasting day tour or weekend trip with a tour operator, but the best way to do it is to drive there yourselves. Of course this means someone has to moderate their drinking in order to keep their blood alcohol levels legal for driving.

Another good option is to hire bikes on arrival in the region and cycle from place to place. The Clare Valley is famous for Riesling and boasts a Riesling Trail, which is well-signposted off the main highway.

We visited the region only briefly, after tasting in the nearby Barossa Valley. Combining the two in one trip is a good idea, but you definitely need more than a day in each place to do them justice. Also, don’t try to visit too many wineries in a day – four is usually a good maximum.
