i really loved muxia – much more than fisterra. a wonderful albergue too. good albergues o the way from santiago. i would recommend muxia and then fisterra. there is an albergue between the two, a hotel actually which stamps your credencial, but you can do the great wooded walk in a day. philip

I am surprised that you didnt know that in Malaysia everything is done based on racial guidelines. Malaysia is the only country in the world that has racial discrimination against all other minority races and the racial discrimination is written into the country laws and constitution!

Hi Linda! Just found your blog and I’m really enjoying your posts! We’re living in China now, and often take “bus adventures” in our city where we just hop on a random bus and see where we end up. Usually we ride until it makes the full loop back to where we started. We’ve seen some interesting parts of our city that way, including getting stuck at a coal mine out in the boonies! Like you said, taking public transport is a great way to explore a place like the locals do and see things you might not have seen otherwise.

We carry hand sanitizer gel with us everywhere we go to use before eating and throughout the day, since you’re often touching money and other “dirty” things

I haven’t seen many photos of Stockholm, but I had a concept in my head that the architecture was much more modern. These photos look so similar to the ones I took while living in Glasgow, Scotland. It is so interesting to see the juxtaposition of the old buildings and the trendy people!

Nice article, Linda! One of the main things I like about the work you do here is spreading the word that the regular 9-5 of work and 2 weeks of holiday a year is not the only option, and this did a good job of outlining the various alternatives.

Just wanted to point out a small factual error, however. You said: “Europeans can work in other Schengen states”, while in fact the case is that all European Union citizens can work in any other country which is a member of the European Union without a visa. There are countries that are part of the EU but have not signed the Schengen Agreement (UK, Ireland, Romania, Bulgaria and Cyprus), and others which are part of Schengen, but not the EU (Switzerland and Norway). What we need is a nice Venn diagram showing the overlap between the EU, Schengen and Eurozone, as these three things so often get confused and conflated!

I’m a big fan of Lush shampoo bars and they normally last me ages… but I suppose if it was both of you using the bar it would disappear more quickly. Good reminder to keep the hand sanitiser accessible–there were plenty of times I could have used it only to remember it was back at the hostel in my toiletry bag!

Check the web link for a heads up. When it comes to adventure sports, New Zealand seems to have a poor safety culture with ineffective state regulation.
Unless you are knowledgable about the safety procedures for your chosen activity, I’d suggest you avoid, but in any case, like any smart indy traveller, do your research, throughly, before you go, ask lots of questions before booking anything, check your insurance and make sure the activity operator has their own, appropriate, current insurance (they should display a certificate).

Sounds like life is treating you well in A Coruña. Regarding the guidebook writing, is there any particular software/word processing you use? I only as because I lot of writers I know speak very highly of Scrivener, which was developed for Macs, as an organisational and word processing program.

Bolivia is amazing! I have been backpacking for the last 3 months all around South America and this is the most authentic country I have found, Chile Argentina and Peru for example are trying to imitate North American and European countries which makes them kind of boring since they are some sort of replicas in middle development, but Bolivia has a feeling of its own and its all raw and amazing to explore! I will sure come back someday soon!

Thanks everyone for your comments, I’m feeling inspired to write another recipe post… If only I had more recipes! If you have a fantastic recipe for travel, please post it in the forums.

Charlie: I’ve never tried making the fritters with rice flour, but I tried mashed potatoes once and it worked okay — of course they were quite different, and tended to fall apart a bit, but they were very tasty.

Travis: you can freeze the mince mix, so that would be the easiest way to take it travelling. When I can, I make a huge potful and divide it into meal-sized portions, which I put into plastic bags or containers and freeze. If you do the same and take it in a cooler, it should be good for a couple of days.

Oddly, mince is quite expensive here in Spain so I’m experimenting with using lentils, capsicum and chorizo as a substitute (with good results), it’s easy to adapt for vegetarians too. And the guacamole is definitely making an appearance.

It did take a bit of looking around, and the agencies didn’t even want us in their offices. We just kept sending texts to the numbers listed around the place until we got a viewing, then took the first that would have us before the opportunity disappeared!

Great to see it all went quite smoothly! I’m surprised you found somebody who would rent a place for you for only three months, that’s awesome.

We tried for ages to find a place to rent in Austria for less than a year, but nobody seemed interested (most people wanted you to stay there for at least 3 years!)
Maybe we should look into finding something in Spain instead..
