Me and my two children who are aged twelve and ten would really like to go on a safari to experience a bit of culture and wildlife but we want to go somewhere that is family friendly and also preferably malaria free. Any recommendations gratefully received.

A few years ago, when I was in college, my family and I went to Kidepo Valley National Park in Uganda. We stayed at Apoka Lodge, which was really remote and absolutely incredible. It was one of the best experiences of my life. We saw so many amazing animals. Might be a little bit too remote for kids though. Thought I would suggest it anyway and leave all options on the table.

Unfortunately, it was not malaria free. You will have to take malaria pills if you go there. I actually got malaria the last day of the trip when we were back in the capital, and I was treated very well and felt great within a day.

Hi Wendy. Botswana and South Africa are both outside of the malaria zone and have great wildlife viewing. Because of the water in the delta, you will be able to see some amazing animals in Bots, but the country’s tourism is primarily focused on safaris. SA, also has some great public and private preserves, but as I’m sure you are aware, has many other cultural activities, including art, music, etc.

You should be aware that many safari companies will not take children younger that 15 or so because of the possible danger. If for some reason a child leaves the safari truck or wanders away from camp, they could be perceived as prey (so could adults, but hopefully you know not to wander away from camp). Furthermore, parents have told me their children get very bored stuck in a truck all day long looking for animals. (At best, it’s 95% bumpy driving, 5% viewing.) Most of them wished they waited until their children were in their late teens when they could appreciate the game drives.

You might want to consider a private preserve, which is more expensive, but often has varying activities and a lodge where they can relax and play. All of that being said, Africa is an amazing place, and when you do go, it’s a trip of a lifetime!
