My Girlfriend and I are planning a trip to Europe this Spring. The two cities we really want to visit and explore are Amsterdam and Vienna, but we are struggling to decide on a third city. We’ve considered cities like Strasbourg, Berlin, Basel or Bern, but just can’t decide. We’re looking for a city that is sort of in between Amsterdam and Vienna and one that is culturally a bit different from them as well.

We’d be really grateful for any city suggestions from seasoned travelers.

Trier might be a good option, or a smaller Belgian city like Ghent. What kind of things do you enjoy, and how long will you have in city #3?

    Thanks for the reply.
We have about 3-4 days in city 3.
We’re both Graphic Designers, so we love art, culture, architecture and design… the usual :) We also enjoy exploring and discovering hidden parts of our home city of Johannesburg, so a city that is great to walk around in, explore and almost get a bit lost will suit us well.

Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll read up on Ghent and Trier, at a glace they both look amazing.

There’s some very interesting Roman ruins in Trier – and some great wine too. Some of my favourite German wines have been from this area.

Ghent is smaller, with good pubs and pretty little streets and squares.

Those were to two that sprung to mind, but places like Baden Baden might be of interest, if you want to get out of the cities for a while and explore the German countryside.

You will enjoy Vienna a compact city full of history. From Vienna you are not far from Bratislava. I have not visited but I have heard some good reports about it.

Hey, howabout Prague. Gorgeous colors, architecture, souvenirs, and spring is a better time to go to avoid pickpockets b/c there are less tourists. There is a palace, old churches, and a simple hopefulness, as the city emerges from USSR influence, that gives its people a nice nature and lots of interesting things to explore. I plan to go again. Although it is a bit east of your main directions and harder to get to by train, perhaps.

The Top 10 Reasons Prague is a Must:
    1) Architecture. Its known as the City of 1,000 Spires, and was spared much of WWII bombing.
    2) Cuisine. It has mixture of east and west with a heavy dose of French.
    3) History. For a gut-wrenching experience, head to the Jewish Quarter.
    4) Strolling. At night the city is lit by a soft glow. Discover the Charles Bridge area.
    5) Culture. The city has a great mix of galleries, museums and exhibits.
    6) UNESCO Sites. Prague offers a historical center filled with them.
    7) Safety. We walked everywhere at all hours and never ran into a problem or felt unsafe.
    8) Value. Its not as expensive as Italian cities or Paris — yet.
    9) Pubs and Beer Gardens. Nuff said.
    10) Ice cream. As crazy as it may seem, Czechs offer some darned good sundaes.

@lostbackpack has it right. Serial short-changing is an issue for tourists in Prague though, so count your cash and use small bills, @steven82

My favourite literary museum is there too: the Kafka museum is a must if you enjoy strange people or strange books.
