    1. Keep your luggage with you until the luggage is checked. If it’s must put your bag down, keep one foot on the handle.
    2. Keep with you important papers; don’t check anything that you simply cannot afford to lose. Photocopy your pp, credit cards etc.
    3. Bring with you a small flashlight. At the night time, keep your flashlight near your bed.
    4. If it’s possible for you travel with only one or two credit cards.
    5. Change your schedule; try not to come and go at the same time everyday.
    6. Try to avoid unmarked taxi cabs.
    7. When traveling sit behind the driver so you can see him, but he cannot see you.
    8. You should park only in well lit and well traveled areas.
    9. Bring with you along a basic first aid kit with bandages, iodine, mosquito repellant, diarrhea medicine, etc.
    10. Exchange your funds with reputable and recognized exchangers only.

The smart traveller program is one run by your government’s embassy/foreign affairs department, or do you mean a security line fast-track program? I haven’t heard of the latter being much use for the price.

My best advice is to travel smart, informed, modest (personality and dress), and aware. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’ve never met a place where you can’t find someone to give you a hand if you really need it.

Smart Traveler Enrollment program is run by the US State Department. I haven’t tried it, but it allows you to register with your itinerary and contact info, so that the local US embassy can contact you in case of an emergency. I should note that the US State Department, while well meaning, is sometimes overly cautious on their warnings about countries.

    Good call, @squong!

Thanks for the info on the US ‘Smart traveler’ programme. Leaving an itinerary with an organisation like that can be handy.

I’m just so cynical… I always wonder what financial benefits or pressures government x is getting/applying by slapping a restricted travel warning on government y. They change tourism numbers, financial ratings, etc. It’s a bit of a minefield.

My theory is that some Americans are paranoid of traveling. I get panicked questions from acquaintances who are going to cancel their trip to Spain because they read the US State Depts warnings about the Basque rebels.
