    Hey all,

I’m planning on doing te Araroa early next year. I was just wondering if anyone has any experience on thru-hiking or ultra-light hiking. I’m thinking I’ll fail at the ultralight (camera/gps/tablet or laptop will blow that out) but it’ll be a good place to start.

In particular I’m wondering if anyone has done any sponsored trips and how you went about getting the sponsorship.

I’m wanting to have this one sponsored with the money raised going to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal. Christchurch is my hometown. I was there for the quakes and even lost a friend. I want to do something to help out and I’m hoping that this will be it.

    Cheers,
    Gold

    Hi Gold,

Te Araroa would be AMAZING! Linda and I have talked about it a few times.

I think you’ll want to talk to the guy that makes Aarn bags – he’s out New Brighton way — as well as being a Cantab, he designs some of the leading packs for ultralight hiking in the world. He’ll probably have the advice and connections you need. http://aarnpacks.com/.

Steve Gurney from Queenstown could help too. http://www.gurneygears.com/about_steve_gurney

    Hey guys,

Thanks for the pointers. I was discussing this with a couple of friends in Chch last week and was put onto the Aarn Packs. Will check out both of these now. :)

    Au.

    Hey guys,

It’s been a while but I have an update. :) Intentionally Homeless is ready for public consumption.

The site is basically pimping the walk. It’s geared towards taking pledges (finally) and apart from that it’s got a blog and journal facility. The journal is basically a blog entry but allows for tracking the lat/long and the distance covered that day in addition to a message if I have anything to say.

I’m supporting 3 charities with this walk.

I’m from Christchurch, New Zealand. My home town has been pretty well trashed by earthquakes over the last year and things are settling down and the rebuild has started so my primary sponsor is the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust.

The second charity is Woman’s Refuge. I’m fortunate in that I don’t personally know anyone that has needed their services. However, they do good work and are deserving of the attention.

The final charity is the NZ Skeptics Society. This is one that is close to my heart and in my mind, a worthy charity also.

So, the site went live last Friday and I disappeared for the weekend. When I got in comms range again on Monday I found that I had a few subscribers chipping in a few dollars a week towards my cost of living and a few pledges also. I’m already up to $850 and this is just from 3 rather limited mail lists. :) Next step is some podcasts and the traditional media. That bit leaves me a little nervous. I’m not used to promoting myself publicly like this.

Craig and Linda, I heard you mention this on the podcast a while back. Got a bit of a thrill at that. :) If you’re able too, it’d be great if you could pimp me out again now the site is ready. ;)

    Regards,
    Gold

Will do, Gold – it’s a great plan & we’re right behind you. Are you going to be in Auckland over the next few months? We fly back in at the end of November and will be around until mid-February.

I’m starting in Bluff and walking north so I’m likely to miss you. :/ I’m expecting to be a few weeks out of Wellington at your departure point.

The idea behind starting down south is to flee the bad weather instead of run to it. :) I’ve heard a number of stories about people making this trek, starting in good summer weather and finishing in calf deep snow. I’m hoping to do this ultra-lite so carrying that sort of clothing won’t be preferable. :) That and I prefer skiing on snow rather than hiking through it.

That makes sense :) It doesn’t look likely, but we’ll see if our paths will cross closer to the time. Good luck with the start of fundraising and the rest of the prep. Sing out here if there are other ways the ITP community can support you.

    Good luck with the walk!
I’m doing it next year. I look forward to your updates as the walk progresses.
