The café

Public Group active 4 days, 13 hours ago

The café is a place to hang out, grab a coffee or glass of wine and chat travel and all sorts with people. If your thoughts don’t fit in any other group, drop them in here and we can mull over them while crunching biscotti.

I just created an album on my profile page “Moments That Change You”. I uploaded a photo of my daughter, snapped during a cooking lesson in Paris. At the time we just thought it was an enjoyable evening. Little did we know… This June our daughter will graduate from culinary school.

Have you or a loved one been changed by a travel experience?

I don’t think I (Craig) can pin down an exact time, but going to Turkey for the first time was quite a massive seachange for me. After almost three years of travelling western and central Europe, the ‘alien’ feel of Turkey’s architecture, people and lifestyle really got me excited.

It was the second wind of travel inspiration that I’m still coasting on today, around three years later.

Turkey is on our wishlist also. Of course, so are 100 other places. :)

Had the opportunity to go to the Galapagos Islands when I was 16. Its beauty made me want to travel forever.

For me it’s the life and death and ‘what-if’ moments that make me realise how lucky we are to be alive and able to see our beautiful planet. In the 2 1/2 years that I’ve been on and off travelling for, I’ve had my share. I’ll spare you the details of some of the incidents, but most recently I stayed in a ‘terrorist camp’ in Iraq just days before it was bombed by the Turkish Air Force. There are videos of the air strikes on YouTube which make me sick to the stomach. We met so many great people on all sides of the Kurdistan-Iran-Turkey conflict and it’s devastating that military action other seems to be the only option right now.

@banzaibambi – What @lostbackpack said… Wow! Was that part of the Mongol Rally last year, or another trip?

Hi guys. Yes, that was on the Mongol Rally. We were the first team to drive through Iraq and it seemed perfectly safe and friendly during the couple of days we were there. I only found out about this a few weeks ago, when randomly surfing the web. Not on a blog, although I am writing a book about the trip – that was one of many experiences that I’ll never forget!
