The Moalboal Backpacker Lodge, located in Moalboal on the island of Cebu in the Philippines is a very shady hostel. The lodge provided a lock and key for the room, as well as a lock and key for the box inside. I left my money belt behind two locks and keys thinking it was safe. [...]

I looked up an article explaining some reasons for the switch to for profit. Basically it looks like the folks at CS are capitalizing on a money maker at their fingertips. http://gigaom.com/2011/09/01/after-going-for-profit-couchsurfing-faces-user-revolt/ I think as long as the general mission of the site stays the same, and it does not charge…[Read more]

Hello All, I wanted to warn any travelers going to Cebu, Philippines to beware of a shady hostel. They are the Moalboal backpackers and stole $300 from me. They provided a locked room with a locked box inside that we left our money belt in. Then went inside and stole from us. I’ve written a [...]

I was wondering who has been inoculated for Rabies? I’m traveling through southeast Asia for 5 months come November and am on the fence whether to get this one or not. Any input on the subject is appreciated.

I completed the 100 hour i-to-i TEFL course before coming to Korea. The course was good and I learned some basics about teaching. For teaching in Korea, the course satisfied the requirement to bump me into the next pay bracket. I’ve heard from other teachers that their i-to-i course was not recognized as a valid [...]

Hello boys and girls, I’m headed out on summer holiday to the Philippines this Saturday, July 30th. I’ll be spending a day in Manila and flying to Cebu. From there the planned route is roughly to Bohol, Siquijor, then the Negros coming full circle back to Cebu and home to Korea. Any suggestions out there? [...]

In thinking about my travel first aid kit, I’ve found that having something on hand for chafing is a must. I used to travel with a small bottle of baby powder, but on one hiking trip I forgot it and had to make a stop at a store. All they had was desitin. It is [...]

For anyone interested in South Korea travel, there are two great tour companies available. The first one is Discover Korea run by William Cho. He is a Korean who spent 20 years in America and can speak both languages excellently. The other group is Intrepid Foreign Excursions, or IFX. This is managed by a group of people who have spent a lot of…[Read more]

I found a pair of lightweight beige Outdoor Research, or otherwise known as OR, hiking pants and they’ve been great. They are lightweight, wick sweat away, and look pretty formal also. I used them hiking through the jungles of Borneo and also sometimes wear them to teach. I’ve found OR makes quality gear that is [...]

Okay specific hostel question on Manila. I’ll be arriving pretty late, at about 1am to the main airport. Is there a nearby hostel that could possibly even pick up two people. No heavy luggage just our backpacks. Thanks!

Hiking here is like driving on an 8 lane superhighway. Especially as a weekend warrior. Koreans love to hike and there will often be bottlenecks and traffic jams where trails narrow. Path’s are extremely well planned and maintained. Don’t expect a private moment for a second, but you can count on some trail magic in the form of cucumbers and…[Read more]
