017 – Independent Travel in New Zealand

June 1, 2007 in New Zealand

The New Zealand All Blacks have just trounced France at rugby and we’re going to have a look at advice for independent travel in New Zealand. Linda and Craig give some advice for for travelling around their home country including: New Zealand English and some Maori words; flying into New Zealand, New Zealand customs regulations, Auckland’s backpacker’s car fair, hostel culture and camping options and working holiday visas.

If that wasn’t enough we mention a couple of great sites and invite your questions and tales about travelling in Aotearoa.

  1. This is an oldie but a goodie! Do hostels in NZ still largely require travelers to supply their own sleeping bag?

  2. An oldie indeed :) Things have improved since this show!

Almost all hostels provide bedding now; the only time you’ll need your own sleeping gear is if you’re staying in DOC huts (i.e. you’re camping or hiking). BBH is the big hostelling organisation here, and the NZ Backpacker Boards are our local forum.

  3. Sweet – thanks for the update!

  4. What a beautiful place! Thank you for the post – I’m thinking about a holiday to New Zealand and it’s looks lovely!

  5. Hi Mandy, glad to be of service :) There’s a lot more New Zealand content on the site: just run a search.
