Have you read Peter Moore? He's an Australian travel writer and writes in a conversational style. His books take on London to Sydney overland ("The wrong way home"), Central America ("The full Montezuma") Cape Town to Cairo ("Swahili for the Broken hearted") and Italy ("Vroom with a view" and "Vroom by the sea").
