I take a fixed blade knife with me when travelling through SEA. Safer than those folding things which are too small to open coconuts, cut papaya, etc. Plus I carry a AAA maglite mini flashlight and titanium cutlery set (have trouble with chopsticks and using my fingers to eat is a short cut to getting the runs. Oh, and don't forget the condoms!

It appears most essential items have been covered in the article and additional comments. For my view I also pack plastic bags and pegs as you never know if you are going to need to keep somethings dry or hang something out in a hurry.

Another great article for travelers. I agree with the sarong; I carry three of four and also I carry "tights" and "stocking" as opposed to long pants. tights for men and women are great under walking shorts and roll up very small in the back pack. My Eee LAPTOP is also a must for me when traveling.

I took a leatherman tool with me. Very useful but you'll have to be careful where you take it for obvious reasons. I also took a Sarong, Doubled up as a towel and soemthing to sit on on a beach!!

It's pretty hard to travel without cash, Yami. We use a combination of debit/credit cards and cash -- avoiding the outdated traveller's cheques. As to where we sleep, here's some accommodation ideas.

Hello, nice website you have here, I just have a few questions, do you carry money? If so, how much do you have? Where do you eat and sleep?

Thank you.

What about adding No.16 - something to help prevent Montezuma's Revenge or Travelers' Diarrhea (TD). There’s a product now available in the U.S. that protects travelers. It’s called Travelan and has been popular in Australia for several years. It’s non-prescription and less expensive than antibiotics. You take it before every meal to neutralize the bacteria that causes TD.

I traveled with 11 of them. However I never once have carried/used a money belt; and I've never lost money or had anything stolen - . The one thing I swear by that wasn't included was a little flashlight - or torch for you Kiwis. I clipped it to my backpack or camera case and it was essential for dorm rooms, power outages, and hiking after sundown!

What's a black market pen? Where are they illegal? Backpackerstan? :)

We carry around a permanent marker too - I mainly use them to label DVDs of video footage that I take but labelling food in hostels also becomes much easier. Great suggestions.

I only have 6, coz I don't have a 'traditional' backpack. Just one of those convertible roller ones, which happily rolled with me all around Europe.
