155 – South American travel: Chile, Argentina and Uruguay

It’s our last week in South America, travelling with our friends Angela and Janine. It’s been an amazing trip and we’re sad that it’s coming to an end. In this episode, we talk about some of our experiences in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

Chile

San Pedro de Atacama is quite different to the south of Chile. We arrived after our Uyuni Salt Flat tour, and found it to be more of a tourist trap than anything else. We really enjoyed the astronomy tour but nothing else caught our fancy.

Ange and Linda spent a weekend in Santiago, and our day-trip to Valparaiso was incredible. It’s a gorgeous city, and its street art and funiculars make it unique. We also found even more things to do in Santiago – I don’t know why the guidebooks give it such a bad reputation.

Argentina

Once again, spending time with people was the highlight of our time in Argentina. We especially enjoyed meeting Leigh, Noah and Lila in Salta, and Camilo and his family in Rosario. Visiting Iguacu Falls was incredible, and being part of Argentina’s bicentenary celebrations was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Argentina is famous for its wine, and we’ve drunk a fair bit of it, but have been disappointed by our wine-tasting experiences here. Either it’s really expensive or you can only taste the cheaper wines.

Uruguay

We spent most of our time with friends, and as a result can highly recommend going to a private lake house, eating asado, and talking until late in the night. Montevideo is a really nice relaxed city, and we also enjoyed our time in Colonia.

Travelled a similar route just over a year ago – very jealous listening to this! You mentioned the wine in Argentina – I’m hoping you sampled some of the Steak as well? definitely the best I ever had. Argentina’s bicentenary celebrations sound fun, I had a similar experience in Montevideo at the end of 2008 – it made me view the city in a whole different light to other travellers who had been there when it was a lot quieter…

You haven’t been to New Zealand, then, Jonny?! We loved the steak and other bits of cow in Argentina and Uruguay especially. Great quality meat, fair prices, slow cooked on the BBQ. Perfect
