042 – Joby Gorillapod review

December 14, 2007 in Travel Gear

This week Craig and Linda at the Indie Travel Podcast turn their attention to the Joby Gorillapod; an innovative camera tripod.

The gorillapod differs from normal tripods by having legs made out of interconnected spheres which can be manipulated to wrap around all sorts of things: tree branches, backs of chairs and even swimming pool rungs. Not fish though.

They discuss the pros and cons of the gorillapod before offering their advice on who it would best suit and whether to add it to your pack.

Thanks to listeners Mark and Kelli for suggesting the review and Joby for supplying one for review.

  1. I considered one of these, but I wasn’t sure they could hold the weight of an SLR. Also, because I do HDR images, if it wobbled just a bit, it would screw it up.

That being said, I think they are very good for simple point and click digital cameras.

  2. We agree. Point and click seems to be their strong point; We’ve heard mixed reviews on SLR models but haven’t used one ourselves.

  3. I have used these before and they are great, really easy to use and very convinient whilst traveling

  4. I found a really cool device online. I’m considering getting it, and it seems much better than the gorilla pod in terms of attaching a camera. I was wondering if anyone has ever used it. It’s called The Smart Pod (http://thesmartpod.com/) . I would like to hear from anyone who has one.

  5. We haven’t. I’ll ask around and see if anyone has. Feel free to weigh in if you have…
