Wet and wonderful: the Hamburg podcast

Hamburg is Germany‘s second-biggest city, and it’s the sixth biggest in the whole European Union… so why doesn’t it feature big when I think about Germany? Now that we’ve visited — spending a grey and drizzly week there as part of the #IndieGermany trip — we really don’t know. It was great.

What did we get up to?

We spent most of our time split between four areas: the north-eastern suburbs of Alsterdorf, St Georg, St Pauli, and City Sud – although we ventured into the docklands, HafenCity, and along the Elbe as far as Teufelsbrück.

We did an amazing food tour with Eat the World in St Georg.

The Miniatur Wunderland is a star attraction: over 1 million visitors per year for this huge (two story!) model.

Of many beautiful buildings the ruins and war memorial at Nikolaikirke stood out.

Which is in stark contrast to the drinking and brothels around the Reeperbahn.

We went down the beach on the Elbe (although the weather was bad)!
