Spaceships are compact campers that are available in England and Scotland without any add-on European travel or one-way fees – and that makes them perfect for exploring: fly into one city, road trip to another, and fly out with no added costs!
In the UK, Spaceships has two types of vehicle: camper vans and motorhomes.
I love to hire Spaceship Campers in the UK because they drive and park much more like a car — they’re converted Ford Transit vans — but give you the freedom and flexibility of a full-sized motorhome. A full Spaceships motorhome has more space and flexibility: a fully-stocked hotel room on wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions about Spaceship Campers in the UK
Are Spaceships fun to travel in?
Oh yes! I love Spaceships because they accelerate and corner like a (big) car, but you can zip into a campsite after dark, and be cooking dinner or sleeping within seconds.
Unlike camping in a tent, you have no set-up or pack-up time; and – for the camper – unlike a traditional motor home, you can park and drive normally. If you hate campsites, natural views, and off-the-beaten-track experiences then maybe you’d be better in a hotel.
We’ve driven Spaceships all over the place! It’s awesome being able to drive up, and start your adventure without any set-up, and the fridge keeps drinks lovely and cold.
Spaceships in the UK allow European travel by ferry or Eurostar, and there are dog-friendly campers and motorhomes available!
Can you use a Spaceship in the UK?
Yes, the camper van type of spaceship! The Ministry of Defense will have some stern words if you try launching unregulated rockets.
Are Spaceship campers in the UK self-contained?
Yes, two models of Spaceship in the UK have bathrooms: the Luxury and Family Motorhomes.

Can I hire electric, EV, or PHEV hybrid Spaceship Campers in the UK?
No, it’s pretty hard to find any electric campers in the UK as there’s very little vehicle production, and the EV infrastructure isn’t quite there in the hard-to-reach places where campers like to travel.
Can you sleep anywhere in a campervan in the UK?
No, you can’t just pull over and sleep anywhere in a campervan in the UK. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland this is strictly prohibited. In Scotland, ‘wild camping’ is allowed, but Camper vans and Motorhomes are not covered by this law.
In practise, some areas in Scotland bide (allow) a night of wild camping, but it’s at the land owners’ discretion, and certainly not a right.
How do I find free camping sites in the UK?
In Scotland, the Stay the Night scheme has plenty of good options. The free Spaceship camping app is very helpful to find the right facilities for you.
Do you need a special licence to drive a campervan in the UK?
Generally, if you are visiting on a valid foreign licence, you can legally drive in the UK with a current drivers license from your home country. If your licence is not in English you must have a translation – like an International Driving Permit (IDP).
However, there are some exceptions. The Gov.uk site has a handy drivers license quiz to help you navigate the rules.
You do not need a special licence to drive a Spaceship camper or motorhome, and there’s no added fees for extra drivers or young drivers. You must be at least 21 years old to hire a Spaceship in the UK.
What are the different models of Spaceship Campers UK?
There are currently three Spaceship Models available in the UK. I’ll give my hot take and link to the full product description for each of them:
- Voyager Campervan – A fully-kitted out converted Ford Transit which sleeps up to 4. My pick for 2 (or more) people who want to explore with the least footprint and easiest driving.
- Luxury Motorhome – A lovely turbo diesel with space for 4 adults and 1 child seat. Much more headroom than the Camper, and is the first in the range to be self-contained, and first to be able to have a baby seat or child seat fitted.
- Family Motorhome – At 6.99m, it’s the same length as the Luxury motorhome, but with added height fits a couple of bunk beds in too, allowing up to 7 people to cruise and sleep in comfort.
Each UK Spaceship runs on diesel, has an integrated fridge, mains hook-up, cooking and sleeping gear provided. The also have Spaceships’ standard unlimited mileage/kilometers, no cost for younger drivers, and no one-way depot fees.

There are 2 spaceship camper van depots in the UK: London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland. You can pick up and drop off from any – there are no extra fees for one-way trips. They are 24/7 contactless pickup by default, so no after-hours fees either.
