Are Spaceships fun to travel in?
Oh yes! I love Spaceships because they accelerate and corner like a (big) car, but you can zip into a campsite after dark, and be cooking dinner or sleeping within seconds.
Unlike camping in a tent, you have no set-up or pack-up time; and unlike a traditional motor home, you can park and drive normally. If you hate campsites, natural views, and off-the-beaten-track experiences then maybe you’d be better in a hotel.
We’ve driven Spaceships all over the place! It’s awesome being able to drive up, and start your adventure without any set-up, and the fridge keeps drinks lovely and cold.
Spaceships in Australia come with complementary rear awnings – so you can camp and sleep with plenty of ventilation on hot days.
Can you use a Spaceship in Australia?
Yes, the camper van type of spaceship! I’m not sure about sending up rockets, but there’s lots of wild space about the place.

No, there are no self-contained Spaceships campers available in Australia.

Can I hire electric, EV, or PHEV hybrid Spaceship Campers in Australia?
No, it’s pretty hard to find any electric campers in Australia as the EV infrastructure isn’t quite there in the hard-to-reach places where campers like to travel.
Can you sleep anywhere in a campervan in Australia?
No, you can’t just pull over and sleep anywhere in a campervan in Australia. There are limited areas with free camping, but there are many budget and council-run campsites that are free or less than $20 per person/night. These will likely have a water source and basic toilet facilities. Private campgrounds will have facilities ranging from the basic to the luxurious.
How do I find free camping sites in Australia?
Some parts of Australia do allow “Freedom camping”, which is the right to sleep in many locations. Rules are different in every State and have changing restrictions and rights you’ll encounter as you move around. The free Spaceship camping app is very helpful to find the right facilities for you.
Do you need a special licence to drive a campervan in Australia?
Each State in Australia has different rules and licensing requirements but, generally, if you are visiting on a valid foreign licence, you can legally drive in all Australian states with a current drivers license from your home country. If your licence is not in English you must have a translation – like an International Driving Permit (IDP).
You do not need a special licence to drive a Spaceship camper, and there’s no added fees for extra drivers or young drivers.

What are the different models of Spaceship Campers AU?
There are currently five Spaceship Camper Models available in Australia. I’ll give my hot take and link to the full product description for each of them:
- Beta Standard Camper – Comes with seating up to four but that’d be tight sleeping conditions! When travelling with 3+, I pick up a small tent and sleeping gear to pitch next door. Or look at the 4-berth family camper…
- 4-berth Family Camper – Seats and sleeps 4, with a small pop-top on the roof to supplement the double-bed indoors. One baby/child seat can be fitted.
- Beta 2S Premium Camper – My go-to favourite for 2 people to have an amazing road trip.
- Alpha Budget Campervan – The original! Older models that are cheaper to hire but are less fuel efficient.
- Transporter People Mover – It’s a car with seating for 8: no built in beds here! But there’s a huge advantage over traditional people-mover hires in having Spaceships’ standard unlimited kilometers, no cost for younger drivers, and no one-way depot fees.

There are 7 spaceship camper van depots in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Hobart, Byron Bay, Airlie Beach. You can pick up and drop off from any – there are no extra fees for one-way trips. They are 24/7 contactless pickup by default, so no after-hours fees either.
